Short answer: Plant peptides from pea, soybean, rice, wheat, corn or walnut are plant-derived, so the material itself fits a vegan and plant-based label. The claims, however, are about the whole supply chain rather than about the source plant: carriers, processing aids, cleaning and shared equipment all matter, and non-GMO status depends on the genetic status of the crop and on documented verification rather than on the word plant.

Plant-derived is the straightforward part

A peptide made from a plant protein isolate contains no animal tissue, so it is vegetarian by origin and carries no animal-derived protein. That is the easy half of the question. The remaining work is confirming that nothing animal-derived enters during processing and that no genetically modified crop material is present, which is a documentation exercise rather than a chemistry one.

Where vegan status can be lost

Genetically modified soybean and maize are cultivated on a large scale in several exporting countries, so peptide made from those two sources needs deliberate non-GMO sourcing, identity preserved handling and documented verification. Genetically modified pea, rice, wheat and walnut are not widely cultivated commercially, which reduces the risk from the crop itself, but it does not remove the need for a declaration, because traceability and cross-contact during transport, storage and processing still have to be controlled. A supplier statement, an identity preserved programme, a third-party non-GMO certificate and, where needed, polymerase chain reaction testing on the finished material are the usual ways the claim is supported.

Allergens sit alongside these claims

Vegan and plant-based are not the same as allergen-free. Soy, wheat and walnut are declarable allergens in most markets, and pea and rice are not, which is part of why pea and rice peptides are often chosen for products aimed at sensitive consumers. A peptide still requires an allergen statement that reflects the source, the processing aids and the possibility of cross-contact on shared equipment, and any precautionary statement has to be justified by a documented risk assessment rather than added routinely.

Match each claim to a document that specifically covers the grade and the site that will supply you, check that the declaration covers processing aids as well as ingredients, and confirm that local rules define the terms you intend to use. Some markets regulate plant-based and non-GMO wording closely while others leave it to advertising law, and the safe approach is to keep the claim no broader than the evidence you hold and to confirm the current position with your regulatory adviser and the supplier documentation.
