Two hydrolysates, two starting materials
Collagen peptide is made by hydrolysing collagen extracted from animal skin, hide and bone. Plant protein peptide is made by hydrolysing a plant protein isolate from pea, soybean, rice, wheat, corn or walnut. The manufacturing logic is the same - controlled enzymatic hydrolysis, then clarification, refining and drying - but the amino acid composition of the feedstock is completely different, and that composition is what each ingredient brings to a formulation.
The amino acid profile is the real difference
Collagen is unusually rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline and contains no tryptophan, with low levels of several other indispensable amino acids, which is why it is not used as a general protein source. Plant peptides reflect their source: soy carries the broadest indispensable amino acid spread of the six, pea is strong in lysine but low in methionine, and rice is low in lysine but mild in taste. Blends such as pea plus rice combine the two patterns. If the product needs to contribute meaningfully to daily protein intake, that difference in profile matters more than the fact that both ingredients are called peptides.

- Thermal behaviour - neither gels on cooling the way intact protein does, so both tolerate pasteurisation and retort conditions when the grade is chosen for it.
Diet, religion and labelling
This is where the two diverge most sharply in commercial terms. A plant peptide can support vegan and plant-based claims and can be certified halal or kosher, and it can be selected from sources that are not declarable allergens, such as pea or rice. Collagen peptide cannot make any of those claims because it is animal-derived. The trade-off is that soy, wheat and walnut peptides do carry soy, gluten or tree nut labelling duties, so the source choice has to be made with the label in view.
Where collagen peptide still fits
Collagen has a long-established identity in beauty-from-within, skin and joint health categories, and consumers already associate the word with those products. Where a brand is built on that association and has no vegan requirement, collagen remains a natural choice and there is no technical reason to replace it. Plant peptides are chosen when the positioning is plant-based, when the amino acid target is broader, when the market or the customer expects a vegan label, or when the protein message has to sit alongside a sports or clinical nutrition claim.
