Food grade vs feed grade hydrolysates: what is the difference?

Short answer: Food grade and feed grade plant hydrolysates are made by broadly similar hydrolysis routes but are controlled against different specifications: feed grade relaxes food safety, labelling and purity criteria while keeping palatability and digestibility targets, and the two must never be mixed or interchanged on a label.
The same chemistry under two rulebooks
Hydrolysis is hydrolysis. A plant protein can be cut with enzymes into shorter chains whether the material is destined for a beverage or for an aquafeed pellet, and the equipment and the reaction are recognisably the same. What separates the two products is the rulebook that governs them. A food grade material is produced under food safety management, released against food specifications, and intended for human consumption under food law. A feed grade material is produced under feed safety management and released against feed specifications, and its legal destination is animal nutrition.

What feed grade relaxes
Feed grade specifications exist for animals, and the limits are set with the target species, the inclusion rate and the withdrawal period in mind. That usually means wider microbiological and heavy metal limits than a food specification, no human allergen labelling duties, no nutrition claim framework and no expectation that the product will be transparent in a beverage or neutral in taste. Colour and clarity are largely irrelevant, because the material is going into a kibble, a pellet or a mash where appearance is not a selling point.
What feed grade keeps
Two performance dimensions survive the change of rulebook. The first is palatability: a hydrolysate used in pet food or aquafeed has to be eaten, and hydrolysates are often included precisely because short chains and free amino acids improve acceptance and intake in young or recovering animals. The second is digestibility: the whole reason for hydrolysing a protein for feed is to make it easier to digest and absorb, so the degree of hydrolysis, the molecular weight profile and the amino acid availability still matter and are still specified.
Why the two cannot be swapped
- Legal use - material released against feed specifications is not released for human consumption, and selling or using it as food is a regulatory failure regardless of its analytical results.
- Labelling - a food product must carry allergen and nutrition information that a feed specification does not generate.
- Traceability and audit - food and feed chains are audited against different standards, so mixing the two breaks the chain of evidence in both directions.
- Contamination risk - a line that has run feed material cannot simply be switched to food production without a validated cleaning and changeover procedure.
What to verify on the certificate
Before buying either grade, confirm on the specification and certificate of analysis that the grade and the intended use are stated explicitly, that the microbiological and heavy metal results are reported against the limits that apply to that use, and that the allergen statement matches the plant source. For feed applications, ask for the palatability and digestibility data or trial results that support the inclusion rate, and for food applications ask for the documentation the destination market requires.
