Which certifications matter for plant peptides?

Short answer: Four certification families decide most plant peptide sourcing decisions: halal, kosher, organic and non-GMO. Halal is close to essential for the Middle East and much of Southeast Asia, kosher is required by kosher-certified customers and many exporters, organic matters for natural-channel listings in Europe and North America, and non-GMO verification is frequently requested by retailers and brands in the US and EU. Food safety schemes such as FSSC 22000, BRCGS or ISO 22000 and quality standards such as ISO 9001 usually support these rather than replace them. Whatever the certificate, verify it with the issuing body and confirm that it names the exact product, the exact site and the current validity period.
Start from the market, not the certificate list
Certification is a market-access question before it is a quality question. A pea peptide sold into a European sports nutrition brand may need organic and non-GMO documentation; the same peptide sold into a Gulf distributor will not move without halal. Rather than collecting certificates, work from the destination market and the customer's specification, then ask which scheme satisfies it.

Systems certificates and what they do not say
FSSC 22000, BRCGS Food Safety, ISO 22000 and similar schemes certify that a site runs a managed food safety system; ISO 9001 covers quality management. GMP audits look at premises, hygiene, traceability and record keeping. None of these tells you whether the material is halal, kosher, organic or non-GMO. A supplier can hold an excellent food safety certificate and still be unable to support an organic claim, because organic status depends on the farm and the certified chain, not on factory hygiene.
The certificate is only as good as its scope
- Product scope. Check that the certificate names the specific peptide or category you are buying, not a broad product family at another plant.
- Site scope. Confirm the manufacturing site, because certification usually attaches to a location rather than to a company.
- Validity. Check the issue and expiry dates, and ask for the current certificate rather than a copy filed years ago.
- Chain of custody. For organic and non-GMO, ask how identity is preserved from raw material intake through hydrolysis, filtration and drying.
- Independent verification. Look the certificate up in the issuing body's online directory, or contact the certifier directly, to catch a certificate that has been altered, expired or transferred.
Points specific to hydrolysed plant proteins
Hydrolysis adds certification-sensitive steps. Enzymes and processing aids must themselves be acceptable to the scheme: a halal or kosher review will ask about the origin of carriers and purification solvents, and an organic review will ask whether the enzymes and filtration aids are permitted. Filtration and ion exchange resins, antifoams and drying carriers are the usual places where an otherwise compliant process picks up a problem. Because a plant may run certified and non-certified lots, separation and cleaning matter as much as the ingredients.
A simple way to build the certificate file
- List the destination markets and the customer's written specification for each product.
- Map each requirement to a scheme and mark whether it applies to the ingredient, the finished product or both.
- Collect current certificates with product and site scope, plus the supporting declarations the scheme requires.
- Verify each certificate with the issuing body and keep the verification note with the file.
- Re-check at renewal, and after any change of raw material source, enzyme, process or site.
