Short answer: Yes. Pharmaceutical gelatin is a film-forming and adhesive coating material used in sugar coatings, sub-coating layers and some tablet film-coating systems to build body, add gloss and improve the adhesion of the coating to the tablet core. How and when it is used depends on the coating approach, the dissolution target and the dose, so each product must be evaluated on its own specification.

Why a tablet gets a coat at all

Coating a tablet is rarely decorative. A coat can hide an unpleasant taste or odour, protect a moisture- or light-sensitive drug, colour-code a product, make a tablet easier to swallow, or smooth an irregular core so a subsequent layer can be applied evenly. Gelatin shows up in this toolbox most often as the undercoat or the gloss-giving layer rather than as the single stand-alone film that modern fast-opening tablets use.

Adhesion and gloss

The two qualities that earn gelatin a place in coating are adhesion and gloss. Gelatin is a protein with a genuine ability to stick to a solid core and to the layer above it, which helps stop a fragile sugar or colour coat from flaking or leaving bald patches. Once set and polished it also yields a clean surface sheen. Because it gels when a warm solution cools, the applied coat sets to a firm, even film quickly in the coating pan, holding the powdered sugar or pigments in place before the next dose is added.

Choosing between a gelatin coat and a synthetic film

Modern tablet coating has largely moved toward cellulose- and acrylic-based film systems that offer very controlled, reproducible release. Gelatin is still a legitimate and useful animal-derived alternative in the right product, but formulators have to balance what they want against what gelatin gives:

Verification before use

Because coating performance is measured on the finished tablet — appearance, weight gain, disintegration or dissolution profile and stability — gelatin is not simply "swapped in". The coating recipe has to be tuned to the core, and the chosen tablet has to pass its dissolution test through its shelf life. Any viscosity, gel strength or dissolution figure from a supplier brochure should be treated as indicative and confirmed against the certificate of analysis (COA) and by testing the actual coated product. When in doubt about whether a given monographed coating is permitted for a particular market, check with the relevant regulatory authority or your supplier before committing a batch.
